Russell Martin told what he must do at Rangers after being given sack warning

Russell Martin’s tenure at Rangers could be short lived unless he does one thing which a former star of the club has advised him to do.

Martin already faces the sack at Rangers following their winless start to the Scottish Premiership season and Champions League exit.

Rangers’ 0-0 draw with Celtic was criticised as one of the worst Glasgow derbies due to both sides current frailties.

The Gers’ next match against Hearts is deemed as a must-win for Martin to ease the pressure at Ibrox.

Pressure of Rangers not getting to the players

As per the Daily Record [11 September], former Rangers striker Jermain Defoe believes the current crop of players does not realise the expectations of playing for the club

Defoe thinks Martin should learn from Steven Gerrard to improve his fortunes.

I feel like a lot of the teams in the Scottish Premiership have improved a lot, which is a credit to the coaches. So, it’s not going to be easy for Russell Martin [to win games],” Defoe said.

I’m not sure exactly what’s going wrong at the club, the performances don’t seem to be there at the moment, but the players have got to take responsibility as well.

Rangers’ start to the season in all competitions.

They have to understand the importance of playing for that football club and winning every game – when I was there with Stevie [Steven Gerrard], he put that pressure onto the players because he was getting the pressure from above.

You have to win and as a manager you put that pressure on the players and if they can’t do it, you bring someone else in who can.”

Martin has elected to leave players like James Tavernier and Nico Raskin out of the team at points this season, with the Rangers boss still learning his strongest starting XI.

Russell Martin must change Rangers mentality

The pressure and noise at Rangers is always huge and Martin has overhauled the squad this summer with 14 new signings.

Still realising the expectations of being in Glasgow, the new players at Rangers have not performed this season and the pressure will only grow.

Despite some poor individual performances and mistakes, it will be Martin losing his job if results do not instantly improve.

Rangers’ title hopes are already looking slim, and based off their European exploits so far, a long run in the Europa League does not look likely.

There doesn’t seem to be many leaders in the Rangers team and Martin could do with more leadership on the pitch to help him through this tough period.
