Samu Aghehowa’s stance on transfer revealed amid Newcastle interest

Newcastle are monitoring the stellar progress of Samu Aghehowa as he continues to excel for Porto.

The 21-year-old is going from strength-to-strength in Portugal, catching the eye of several top Premier League clubs.

Sources told Football Insider that Tottenham are monitoring the progress of Aghehowa, given the injury woes of Dominic Solanke.

Similarly, looking further back to the summer of 2024, Chelsea had submitted an offer for Aghehowa which never came to fruition.

The latest club intrigued by the Spaniard’s high ceiling is Newcastle with Eddie Howe eager to bolster his frontline.

January move for Aghehowa unlikely as Newcastle monitor his situation

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Toon are keen to bring the ex-Atletico Madrid forward to St James’ Park.

Sources told Football Insider that Newcastle want to sign Aghehowa for less than his £87million release clause.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast over the Spaniard’s likelihood of heading to Tyneside, I explained: “Porto are going good in the Portuguese league right now.

“They’ll be very reluctant to sell Aghehowa and I’m sure the player himself is happy with life at Porto right now.

“He’ll be focusing on doing his best for him and winning his place in the Spain squad for the World Cup. So I don’t see any move happening in January.

“Look, there’s a lot of interest in like Aghehowa, a top young player, still only 21, six-foot-four. He looks like he’s built for the Premier League. He’s got good pace, he’s a good finisher.”

Yoane Wissa’s recovery to be decisive in Eddie Howe ramping up interest in Aghehowa

Given the Magpies brought in two strikers in the summer and with Willy Osula in their ranks, there are doubts whether they will want to sign another forward in January.

Sources told Football Insider that Newcastle are unlikely to sign a new striker if Yoane Wissa can recover quickly from injury.

The DR Congo international is yet to feature for his new club since signing on transfer deadline day, but is expected to be back before he heads off for AFCON in December.

However, any further setbacks in his recovery could see the Toon push hard to bring in Aghehowa, given the possibility of Nick Woltemade picking up an injury from a heavy workload.

Osula has not been trusted by Howe up top, highlighting the importance of strengthening the frontline should the number 11 be unable to feature anytime soon.
