Sandro Tonali: Newcastle turn attention to completing multiple midfield signings
Sandro Tonali’s potential summer exit has seen Newcastle United chiefs plan to sign several new midfielders in his place.
Tonali’s future at St James’ Park looks uncertain ahead of the summer window after Newcastle’s disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
The Italy international has continued to be standout under Eddie Howe, but has not been able to help his side into European contention this season.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, the Magpies are planning to sign several new midfielders if he leaves, rather than one direct replacement.
Newcastle’s transfer plans are set to hinge on which players push to leave this summer, and they will want to avoid any situations dragging on into the new season, akin to Alexander Isak last year.

Sources have told Football Insider that Man United are set to accelerate a move for Tonali ahead of the summer window, with Man City also interested in his services.
Newcastle are reluctant to let him leave, but may be forced to if they miss out on European qualification, with numerous new players set to be signed if he does make an exit.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Newcastle, I think it’s going to be a big summer for them.
“I think their main priority will be to try and keep hold of their top players.
“If they do lose a couple of players, the likes of Tonali or whoever, then they will need to be replaced with midfield reinforcements.”
Newcastle want Manuel Ugarte but face competition from Juventus
Ugarte is on Newcastle’s radar, according to Football Insider’s sources, as he struggles for game time at Man United under Michael Carrick.
Newcastle are not believed to be the Uruguayan’s priority, however, with Juventus and numerous other top European clubs also plotting a move for his services.
Ugarte has only made seven league starts for the Red Devils this season, but Newcastle could use Man United’s interest in Tonali to broker a swap deal of sorts between the two clubs.
