Joe Hart is saving the bacon of Postecoglou at Celtic - Scottish pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Ange Postecoglou needs to amend his tactics at Celtic and claimed Joe Hart keeps saving the manager’s bacon.

The former Rangers full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the Hoops’ defensive record is not good enough on the continent.

Celtic, who lost 3-2 to Bayer Leverkusen in their last European tie (25 November), have conceded more (13) than any other team in the Europa League group stage.

However, the Bhoys’ domestic record has been better, having conceded the least (10) in the Premiership this term.

Hutton suggested Postecoglou’s attack-minded tactics are the main reason for their struggles in Europe.

Asked if personnel or tactics were behind Celtic’s defensive issues, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think there’s a bit of both, if we’re going to be totally honest.

“They do concede far too many goals. I think in the Leverkusen game, Joe Hart was possibly man of the match. Without the saves he pulled off, it could have been a lot more, and that’s a regular issue.

“Ange has a particular way of playing. He likes to be on the front foot and aggressive. Involving his full-backs in the play. To me, it doesn’t look like he’s going to change that.

“It doesn’t really matter at this moment in time who he’s coming up against, he’s sticking to his philosophy and his plan. That’s the way he wants to play.

“Fair play to him for doing that. I think you have to be wary when you do come up against these bigger teams, the likes of Leverkusen, who are a fantastic team.

“You do have to change slightly. I remember playing with Rangers when we went into the Champions League. We were very defensive and hit on the counter. You’d have to, or you’d get beat.

“Maybe it’s a little bit more tactical but there are some errors in there as well.”

Celtic will drop into the Europa Conference League after securing third place in their Europa League Group.

They play Real Betis a week on Thursday (9 December).
