Sean Longstaff stance on quitting Newcastle for free revealed

Sean Longstaff’s preference is to remain at Newcastle United as his contract at the club runs down, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (16 September) that the Magpies are not willing to let midfield star Longstaff, 26, walk away from the club on a free transfer in 2025.

But at present his deal will expire at the end of this season and the Newcastle academy graduate can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides in January.

The midfielder is in a strong position but it is believed he is keen to remain at St James’ Park and sign a new long-term deal.

Sources say Eddie Howe wants Longstaff to remain with the club past the end of this season.

He remains a key man in midfield despite their big-money transfer activity in recent seasons.

Longstaff is also a favourite with the Newcastle faithful after coming through the club’s academy ranks.

He has been virtually ever-present for the Magpies this term with Sandro Tonali still finding his way back to full match fitness.

The Newcastle-born 26-year-old made 46 appearances across all competitions last term and scored eight goals – including a memorable strike in the 4-1 demolition of Paris Saint-Germain.

Longstaff made his first-team debut under Rafa Benitez in 2018 and has gone on to make 187 appearances for his boyhood club.
