Danny Mills hailed the “sensational” Thiago Alcantara after the new Liverpool signing made his debut against Chelsea yesterday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former England international was in awe of the midfielders now at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal following the 29-year-old’s arrival.
Thiago was named on the bench for the trip to Stamford Bridge just 48 hours after he penned a four-year contract at Anfield worth £200,000-a-week, Football Insider understands.
The Spanish playmaker, who has won nine league titles and two Champions Leagues, was introduced after the interval to replace captain Jordan Henderson who had a tight thigh.
The debutant, playing against ten men following Andreas Christensen’s dismissal in first half stoppage time, broke the record for the most completed passes in a maximum of 45 minutes.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Liverpool’s new £20million signing, Mills said:
“Thiago is a sensational player, there is no doubting that.
“I just wonder where he fits in. That is the only issue that I see. Is he going to be the out-and-out sitter instead of Fabinho when everyone is fit? People say Fabinho was not great last season but the season before he was superb in that holding role.
“Wijnaldum, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Milner and Naby Keita – there is a lot of players vying for places.”
The Reds are currently without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after he suffered a knock to his knee at the end of preseason, while they await to here the full extent of Henderson’s injury.
Speaking on Thiago’s debut, Jurgen Klopp said: “Defensively it was tricky for him because we set it up differently but when he had the ball, that’s him, he wants to pass the ball.”
