Sunderland have confirmed that a total of seven first-team players will be missing for the upcoming Championship clash against Aston Villa.

The Black Cats confirmed on the club’s official website on Monday afternoon that Marc Wilson, Jonny Williams, Duncan Whitmore, Paddy McNair, Lamine Kone and Billy Jones are all injured whilst midfield enforcer Lee Cattlemole is suspended.

With so many absentees, it will be difficult for new manager Chris Coleman to get off to the perfect start when Sunderland travel to Villa Park on Tuesday evening.

Sunderland have endured a terrible start to life back in the Championship as they currently sit at the bottom of the league table, four points adrift from safety.

Steve Bruce’s side will be the firm favourites going into the midweek fixture after they managed to come from behind to beat Queens Park Rangers on the weekend.

Villa currently find themselves in the playoff positions with a three point advantage over the chasing pack.

The last league encounter between the two sides came in the 2015-16 Premier League campaign where Sunderland came away with a 3-1 victory at the Stadium of Light.

It will be emotional match for Bruce as he spent two years at Sunderland.
