'Shaky' Newcastle United claim issued as source reveals new Nick Pope details - pundit

Newcastle United have had an issue with “shaky” goalkeepers for years and the potential arrival of Nick Pope may rectify their problem, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker hailed Pope’s shot-stopping abilities but questioned whether he was competent enough with the ball at his feet.

A Newcastle source told Football Insider on Tuesday (21 June) that the 30-year-old is set for a medical with the club on Wednesday (22 June).

They have had a bid accepted and it is expected that the signing will be completed on Thursday (22 June).

He is set to become the first new addition to the squad this summer after Matt Targett completed a permanent move from Aston Villa earlier in the window following a successful loan spell.

“For me, they’ve been shaky for years, Newcastle in the goalkeeper department,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They need someone to say ‘I’m going to be no.1, I’m going to be consistent’.

“Pope, for me, is that. I think he would be a perfect signing.

“For me, goalkeepers are about shot-stopping. If you’re great with your feet, it’s a bonus. He’s not really great with his feet but he’s one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League.

“That’s something I would be confident of and I’m sure that’s what Eddie Howe is thinking.”

Pope kept nine clean sheets in 36 Premier League games in the 2021-22 season but could not stop Burnley from being relegated to the Championship.

The eight-time England international has kept 47 clean sheets in 141 top-flight games for the Clarets.
