Shearer: Newcastle must keep senior man for the Premier League

By Dominic Toner

Alan Shearer believes that it’s imperative manager Rafael Benitez stays at Newcastle next season.

The Magpies recently sealed their promotion to the Premier League after a strong season in the Championship.

They are still chasing the league title, but are likely to miss out on that accolade to rivals Brighton.

Several star players such as Jonjo Shelvey and Dwight Gayle have taken huge credit for their success, but manager Benitez has played a crucial role.

The experienced Spanish boss has used the full depth of his squad throughout the campaign and enjoyed success during his first taste of the competitive Championship division.

Newcastle legend Shearer feels it’s crucial that Benitez in charge next season and feels he can take the club forward.

“I think it’s hugely important that Newcastle keep hold of Rafa Benitez,” Shearer told Coral, as cited by their official Twitter account. “They have got one hell of a manager there, experience, and I just hope he gets the backing that he deserves and then he can take the club forward.”

Benitez moved to St James’ Park in March 2016 and was unable to prevent them from suffering Premier League relegation.

However, they have bounced back at the first attempt and 57-year-old has pioneered their success.

His decision to stay with the Championship side came as a shock for many as he has experience at some huge clubs, including the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool and Napoli.
