Shearer delivers damning verdict on one Poch decision after Tottenham draw v Rochdale
Alan Shearer believes that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was wrong with his team selection after the 2-2 FA Cup draw against Rochdale.
The Newcastle United and England legend felt that the Argentinian should have gone with a stronger line-up from the start in order to see off their League One opponents and made changes once the result was in the bag.
Speaking on BBC One’s Match of the Day programme broadcast live at 16:00 Shearer also stated that the incoming players lacked match fitness and that Pochettino made the same mistake against Newport County.
The ex-striker said: “You don’t want another game.
“So I said about playing your big players to get two or three in front and then take them off.
“It’s the worst thing in the world now for them they’ve got another game.”
It was a poor all-round display from Spurs who only days earlier had played impressively in Turin against Serie A giants Juventus.
And they were a world away from that result in Sunday’s FA Cup tie.
Pochettino opted to ring the changes, bringing in Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Lucas Moura, Toby Alderweireld, and Fernando Llorente to the starting XI.
It was a decision that backfired on the Spurs boss as Rochdale more than matched the Premier League side.
Keith Hill’s team took the lead right at the end of the first half when Winks was caught in possession and Ian Henderson capitalised, running through on goal to give the Dale the lead.
Lucas Moura made it all square with a debut goal and a Harry Kane penalty late on look to have fired the away side into the next round of the cup.
But Steve Davies scored a deserved equaliser in stoppage time to give the Lancashire outfit another bite at the cherry and an extra game for the Lillywhites to contend with.
