Shearer: This is how takeover could transform Newcastle, names quartet of transfer priorities

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has said that a takeover at the club could transform the Magpies’ fortunes and even see them make a return to Europe.

The north east side were officially put up for sale by current owner Mike Ashley earlier this season, which has led to many rumours, reports and claims over the club’s future.

It has most recently been stated that Ashley is closing in on a £300million deal with British businesswoman Amanda Staveley, who is fronting a move from PCP Capital Partners, to secure the takeover.

Now, with an agreement looking likely, Newcastle legend Shearer says that the club could see a complete change of fortunes under new ownership, insisting that a surge up the Premier League table and qualification for Europe in the long term is not confined to the realms of imagination.

However, looking at the immediate future, he says that the club must prioritise a quartet of signings if they want to ensure top flight survival in the current campaign.

Asked if returning to Europe was a possibility in a Facebook live video with Coral, he said: “Yes, I do. Newcastle is a huge football club – the better the takeover happens for everyone – they need new faces, a different spark at that football club..

“Rafa needs investment in that team; I thought it was going to be a long, hard season anyway but he needs new players in January and for that to happen there needs to be investment.

“They need a centre-forward, a goalkeeper – because there’s been errors in that department which has cost us points – another centre-half and a midfielder. They need to strengthen in every position.”

Newcastle’s last foray into Europe saw them reach the Europa League quarter finals after a fifth placed finish in the Premier League the season prior.
