Paddy Kenny thrilled by update on Sheffield United swoop for 'top class' Hourihane

Conor Hourhihane is “absolutely top class” and his Championship pedigree makes him a dream signing for Sheffield United.

So says ex-Blades legend Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Aston Villa man was linked with a Brammall Lane switch.

The Athletic reported on 18th July that United are interested in the 30-year-old midfielder.

Hourihane, who is under contract at Villa Park until next summer, shone on loan in the Championship at Swansea City in the second half of 2020-21.

Kenny raved over the Republic of Ireland international’s ability and insisted that he would be an “impressive coup” for the Blades.

“He’s an absolutely top-class player,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“He’s an Ireland international as well. To be linked with someone like him, you’ve got to say that having a good manager who plays good football plays its part.

“He can attract these players because they know his record in the Championship. They are hoping to be right near the top of the table.

“Anyone that does come on loan or signs, that’s what they’ll want to hear.

“So if they can get Hourihane then that would be a massive coup for Sheffield United. He’s experienced promotion before so he’s got that as well.”

Hourihane was an integral part of the Villa side who won promotion from the second tier in 2018-19.

He has featured 150 times for the club since signing from Barnsley in 2017.
