Paddy Kenny: Slater not ready for major Sheffield United role after reported Jokanovic reveal

Regan Slater is not ready to be “thrown in at the deep” at Slavisa Jokanovic’s Sheffield United.

That is according to ex-Blades goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 21-year-old who spent 2020-21 on loan with League One champions Hull City.

Yorkshire Live reported on 16th June that the Tigers want to make his switch permanent.

However, it is claimed that newly-appointed United boss Jokanovic will give Slater the chance to be part of his plans next term.

The defensive midfielder was due to be out of contract this summer but the Blades took up the option to extend his deal by a year.

Kenny claims that a “bit-part” role awaits Slater if he remains with United next season.

“He’s still a very young lad,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“He’s been playing at Hull and been promoted with them last season, but I’d be surprised if he’s ready to be thrown in at the deep end.

“In the Championship you need experienced pros to help you get out of the division.

It might be one of those where he comes in, gets some games and plays a bit-part role in the team.

“I think it’s better to do things gradually. It’s amazing what he’s done in getting promoted with Hull but expectations are going to be high next season.

“I think it would be a lot to ask of such a young lad so soon. Hopefully, they can gradually build him up and then introduce him that way.”
