Alan Hutton admits he was left raging with the “shocking” decision to penalise Tottenham defender Eric Dier for handball against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and Scotland full-back insists the call to award a penalty was “absolute nonsense” from the officials.

Referee Peter Banks gave Newcastle a spot-kick in added time after Andy Carroll’s header hit Dier’s arm and Callum Wilson dispatched the penalty to seal a 1-1 draw for the Magpies.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho refused to comment on the decision, which has been blasted by fans and pundits, after the game.

Hutton has joined in the criticism and admits he would have wanted to walk off the pitch if such a call had gone against him.

Hutton told Football Insider: “Argh, come in, it can’t be handball! The rule winds me up, honestly, it’s an absolute nonsense. Common sense, surely?

“Even if VAR say to the referee: ‘Go have a look at the monitor, use your common sense.’ That’s all you have to say, surely. If I’m a defender and someone’s right in front of me, I sprint out and fling my hand way out from my side and stop the ball from going in the net, that’s a penalty.

“If my hand’s down by my side and out a little bit as I go to tackle somebody, it’s a natural movement. You don’t have your hands by your side or if you jump for a header your arms are up – he’s not even facing the way of the ball.

“It frustrates the life out of me, if I was a defender and that happened to me, you’d be raging, you’d want to walk off the pitch, you’d be that annoyed. It’s a nonsense, you have to use your common sense when it comes to these things. I think it’s a shocking decision.”
