Celtic star Moussa Dembele missed out on a move to Tottenham because of a failed medical, according to a report.
Get West London claim that then-Fulham youngster Dembele was on the verge of completing a £6million move to White Hart Lane in the January transfer window, but the move collapsed due to a failed medical.
The approach from Tottenham had been reported, but it was not yet known exactly why the move fell through at the last-minute.
However, the latest report has finally shed some light on the failed move, and Tottenham fans will no doubt be kicking themselves after seeing his recent form for Celtic.
The 20-year-old has netted an incredible 27 goals from 41 appearances this season, including seven goals in his last three games.
His blistering form has seen him heavily linked with a big-money move across Europe, with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea all reportedly keen for his signature.
After landing him on a free transfer at the start of the season, Celtic could now earn as much as £40million from his future transfer.
The £6million deal with Tottenham would have seen Dembele return to Fulham on loan for the rest of the season, to aid their battle for Championship survival.
However, after his contract expired in the summer, the London club ended up losing him to Celtic for just £500,000 worth of compensation, instead of the £6million deal they had agreed with Tottenham six months’ earlier.
Football Insider verdict
With Vincent Janssen showing little quality as competition for Harry Kane at Tottenham this season, Dembele certainly could have been a handy addition. The exact reason why he failed the medical has not been revealed by the report, but it does highlight just how close Tottenham were to completing the deal. Given his current form and hero status at Celtic this season, they will no doubt be left wondering what could have been. It would have been interesting to see who Celtic might have acquired instead of Dembele, and how he might have fared in the Premier League at Spurs.
