Signing on Monday: Brentford beat Aston Villa in Cox race as deal agreed - Sources

Brentford have won the race to sign AFC Wimbledon goalkeeper Matthew Cox ahead of five Premier League clubs including Aston Villa, Football Insider can reveal.

This site revealed on Thursday that Brentford submitted a bid for the highly-rated 18-year-old as they looked to steal a march on their rivals.

A Brentford source has told Football Insider that the teenage shot-stopper will undergo medical ahead of signing a contract on Monday.

Cox has attracted interest from numerous Premier League sides this summer, with Aston Villa and Norwich City known admirers.

Cox signed his first professional contract in May 2020 but is yet to make a senior appearance.

His impressive development in Wimbledon’s academy resulted in a call-up to England Under-17s squad last year.

He kept a clean sheet on his debut in a goalless draw with Ukraine in February.

David Raya is the undisputed number one at Brentford – he started 42 times throughout the club’s promotion-winning 2020-21 campaign.

The Bees’ second-choice goalkeeper, Luke Daniels, was released upon the expiration of his contract at the end of last month, while youngsters Ellery Balcombe and Patrik Gunnarson spent last season out on loan.

Aston Villa are in the market for reinforcements in the goalkeeping department after Tom Heaton joined Man United earlier this month.

Emiliano Martinez is Dean Smith’s undisputed number one, with Jed Steer expected to assume number two duties until a replacement for Heaton is found.
