Sky: Liverpool in talks with top-flight club for 22-year-old attacker

By Derek Smithson

Liverpool are in talks with Sporting Lisbon about attacker Gelson Martins, according to a report.

Sky Sports claim that the Reds have ditched attempts to sign Roma’s Mo Salah and have now turned their attention to Martins.

It is understood that the Merseyside club have scouted the 22-year-old throughout the season and watched his performances in the Portuguese top flight.

The report details that the Sporting winger has a £46.5million release clause, but it’s believed Liverpool could secure a deal for just under £40million.

Martins was in good form last season for Sporting, scoring seven goals and supplying 14 assists.

The five-time capped Portugal international is renowned for his blistering pace and his decision making in front of goal.

He is being tipped for a bright future and already has experience in European football.

Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that Liverpool had agreed personal terms for winger Salah with Roma, but they were holding out for £35million and Jurgen Klopp is now eyeing Martins.

Football Insider verdict:

Liverpool need to strengthen their squad in the summer, but a defensive addition should be a priority. Klopp likes pace in the wide area and Sadio Mane was a shinning example last season of a winger making a huge impact at Anfield. Martins is in the same mould as Mane, but may not have the same confidence just yet. The 22-year-old undoubtably has huge potential to develop into a prolific goalscorer and has time on his side. However, Liverpool would have to fork out nearly £40million for his signature and it would be a huge risk. In addition, he is yet to prove himself in the Premier League and there is every chance he could flop.

In other Liverpool transfer news, they are eyeing a 26-year-old defender from Serie A.
