Sky pundit delivers verdict on Tottenham top four chances

By Dominic Toner

Tony Cottee believes that Tottenham can’t afford many more performances like the one they showed at Anfield if they are to finish inside the top four this season.

Spurs were well beaten away to Liverpool on Saturday as Sadio Mane scored a first-half brace for the hosts in a 2-0 victory.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were rarely able to test their opponents in the Premier League game and are now 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

However, Spurs may now be more focused on securing a top four spot and booking their place in the Champions League for next season.

The north London are currently occupying second in the league table, but the competition is extremely close as sixth-placed Manchester United are just two points behind them.

Sky Sports pundit Cottee expressed his disappointment with Spurs’ display on Saturday and feels they will need to improve drastically to finish inside the top four places.

“It was a really disappointing performance at Liverpool,” Cottee said, as quoted by Sky Sports’ website. “They didn’t turn up and never looked like they were going to score. They can’t afford too many like that if they want to stay in the top four.”

Spurs have a short break before they resume their league campaign on 26 February at home to stoke.

They will be desperate to return to winning ways and cling on to the valuable top four spot.

Pochettino’s side have both legs of their Europa League last 32 tie with Belgian side Gent to play first, as well as a visit to London rivals Fulham in the FA Cup fifth-round.
