Barton, who helped Burnley win promotion to England’s top-tier last season, joined Mark Warburton’s side as a free agent in the summer.
The 34-year-old made eight appearances for the Glasgow giants in his first spell in Scottish football.
But before his career at Rangers began it is set to come to an abrupt end following his involvement in a training ground incident after the 5-1 Old Firm defeat to rivals Celtic in September.
Barton is no stranger to controversy after receiving the Premier League’s second largest ban of 12 matches following his actions after a red card against Manchester City, as well as serving jail time during his Newcastle days.
In other Rangers team news, former Celtic defender Ramon Vega believes this senior figure may never recover from this defeat.
