Everton midfielder Davy Klaassen may no longer be joining Italian club Napoli on loan, according to a repot.
Sky Sports claim on their live transfer blog (12:59pm, Wednesday) that Serie A side have been in talks with the Toffees over a loan swop for the 24-year-old.
It is understood that Napoli have been negotiating a loan deal for the rest of the season, but a move could now be off the table after they realised the Dutchman is cup tied in the Europa League.
The report details that Napoli believed they were closing in on a deal and may now back out to pursue alternative targets.
Klaassen has fallen out of favour under Sam Allardyce and really struggled to make an impact in English football since his summer arrival at Goodison Park.
The playmaker has made just 13 appearances across all competitions this season and has failed to chalk up his first goal.
Football Insider verdict
If Klaassen’s loan exit collapses it would be terrible news for the central midfielder, who is unlikely to get much of a look-in with Everton in the second half of the season. The Toffees splashed out £24million on his signature in the summer and he has been a major disappointment. However, his Merseyside career should not be completely written off and a loan spell away with current Serie A leaders Napoli would be a great move for him. Everton do have an overload of midfield options in their squad and it seems unlikely Klaassen will return from the cold to play a crucial role this campaign.
