Sky Sports pundit and former Nottingham Forest midfielder David Prutton has stated that it is a “huge blow” for Cardiff to drop out of the top two ahead of their clash against Aston Villa on Tuesday night.
Prutton also reckons that it is a must-win game for the Villans at Villa Park but that Neil Warnock’s side will emerge with all three points with a 2-0 win.
Cardiff fell to defeat last time out in the Championship against table-toppers Wolverhampton Wanderers – it was a loss that saw the manager and Nuno Espirito Santo go head to head at the final whistle as the Yorkshireman was unhappy with the Portuguese’s celebrations.
As quoted on Sky Sports, Prutton said: “How much will the manner of Cardiff’s defeat at Wolves impact them going forward? Suddenly the gap between themselves and Fulham is just two points, and even though Neil Warnock’s side have a game in hand it would still be a huge blow to find themselves outside of the top two.
“Aston Villa would have hoped to be the side doing the chasing, but one win in five seems to have left them with too much to do. Victory is essential for them on Tuesday night but I think Cardiff will get back to winning ways here.”
Football Insider verdict:
Despite the defeat last time out, Cardiff are the side in form going into this Championship clash. Three defeats in five games for Steve Bruce’s men and just one win has seen them drop from second in the table to fourth and hopes of automatic promotion all but gone. The Bluebirds, meanwhile, have lost once in the last five and it would be difficult to see past them for this fixture. Warnock’s side will be keen to end Villa’s thin hopes of a top-two finish and they will get this on Tuesday night.
