Sky Sports pundit: These three Rangers big names could quit if Murty axed
By Richard Parks
Kris Commons has predicted that Josh Windass, Declan John and Daniel Candeias could quit Rangers if Graeme Murty is axed at the end of the season.
The Sky Sports pundit claimed in the Scottish Daily Mail that the big-name trio will be considering their futures if the Ibrox board decide not to make the former defender the permanent manager.
Murty was appointed caretaker boss last October in the wake of Pedro Caixinha’s dismissal and was then handed the job in December until the end of the season.
Celtic legend Commons believes the inconsistency of many of the Rangers players can be traced to the uncertainty over the manager’s position.
“Too many of those doing well for them at the moment are loans,” Commons told the Mail. “Others are out of contract in the summer and, in Lee Wallace’s case, some have still to come back from injury. But, fundamentally, no one knows what’s happening with the manager next season.
“If people outside the club are talking about it, those in the dressing room will be, too.
“Players performing well at the moment – Declan John, Daniel Candeias and Josh Windass – are probably hoping Murty stays. But if he’s not committed they’ll be wondering where their future lies.”
Football Insider verdict
Windass, John and Candeias have all been key performers under Murty and are probably three of the first names on his teamsheet for each match. It would be a serious concern for Rangers top brass if the two attacking midfielders and left-back John demanded moves were Murty to be given the heave-ho. That is likely to happen unless the team secure a second-placed league finish, beat Celtic this month and go on to win the Scottish Cup.
