Former BT Sport and current Bundesliga commentator Derek Rae has been giving his thoughts on Celtic’s new signing Marvin Compper – and he isn’t exactly impressed.
Rae has commentated on both Scottish and German football for many years, and as a result was able to judge how the new signing will fare in the Scottish Premiership.
Rae, as quoted in the Evening Times, believes that the 32-year-old will become a good enough signing for the Scottish champions, but warned that he isn’t the player that he used to be.
“Celtic are not getting a defender whose services are in demand by countless Bundesliga clubs. Compper has played for his country, but a long time ago and his best days are behind him,” Rae said.
After this criticism of the player, Rae offered up some thought on the good aspects of his game.
He added: “Compper is an experienced, left footed central defender who is a slight improvement over what Brendan Rodgers has already at his disposal. He’s strong in the tackle and will win his share of duels plus he’s a decent enough passer from the back”
The player joins the Hoops from Leipzig after falling out of the first-team picture at the Bundesliga side this season.
He has plenty of experience, having also played for Hoffenheim and a short spell with Fiorentina in Serie A, and will join up with his new team-mates in Glasgow in January.
To matters on the pitch, the Hoops are next in action against Partick Thistle on Wednesday, looking to bounce back from the 4-0 defeat to Hearts which ended their British domestic record unbeaten run at 69 games.
The Celts are currently two points ahead of closest challengers Aberdeen in the title race, and they will be hoping to extend the gap to five points against bottom of the table Partick Thistle before taking on Aberdeen at Celtic Park on Saturday.
In other Celtic news, Lewis Morgan is not the player who will take the Hoops to the next level
