'Sneaky' Ferguson may be plotting managerial coup after confirmed Everton news - pundit
Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Duncan Ferguson may have one eye on the Everton manager’s job.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward delivered his verdict after the Toffees legend was confirmed as one of Rafael Benitez’s backroom team.
Football Insider learned on 17 June Rafael Benitez was set to hand Ferguson a key role on his coaching staff.
The club confirmed as Benitez was unveiled on 30 June that Ferguson would be working with the ex-Liverpool boss.
Benitez’s appointment has been widely unpopular amongst the Blues faithful because of his Liverpool links and previous comments about Everton.
“I am surprised Ferguson’s staying on,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“But does he have to keep Duncan Ferguson on? Is Duncan Ferguson part of the club? He maybe doesn’t have a choice.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if the club said to him ‘Duncan has to stay on. He’s part of the club and he’s going to help you understand everything about the club.’
“Whatever manager came into the club Duncan would have kept his job.
“Duncan Ferguson’s probably thinking ‘I love this club. I’m not happy with the manager coming in but I’ll get through it.’
“And if you’re Duncan Ferguson, sneakily in your mind you’re thinking ‘Five or six bad games with bad results at Goodison Park, I’m back in the main job as caretaker.’
“If I’m Duncan that’s in the back of my mind so it’s a win-win for him.”
After spending over 10 years as a player at Goodison Park, Ferguson has worked as a coach under Carlo Ancelotti, Marco Silva, Sam Allardyce, Ronald Koeman, Roberto Martinez and David Moyes.
The 49-year-old oversaw four games in temporary charge after Silva was sacked and before Ancelotti was appointed in December 2019.
