Some Newcastle fans fume over reported transfer development of £35k-a-week midfielder
Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino is on the brink of a return to his homeland according to a report in Spain, but after hearing the news that a transfer could be on the cards, some supporters are devastated.
Marca, the Spanish Media outlet revealed that the defensive midfielder is set to join Real Sociedad, although a fee is yet to be agreed between the Magpies and the La Liga outfit.
Merino, who according to spotrac earns £35,000-a-week at St James’s Park, made a total of 25 appearances across all competitions following his move from Borussia Dortmund last summer on a five-year deal, scoring one goal and one assist in that time.
But aside from one or two supporters who back the transfer, fans are mainly in accordance over the fact that they do not want to see Merino leave this summer.
One member of the Magpies faithful even went as far to say that he regretted renewing his season tickets in light of the revelation over the player’s future.
The 22-year-old clearly impressed the St James’s Park crowd in his debut season for the club, despite the fact that after a strong start in the side, a back injury left him scrapping for action.

What a joke of a club! #NUFC I’m starting to regret renewing all 3 season tickets straight off! I won’t be next season #fact @NUFC

Oh well at least he had half a dozen good games. Seems bizarre that we even bothered to sign him permanently though?

Massive loss. Stupid if we let him go. Big talent

I just don’t understand any of this

How can he choose Sociedad, it’s down to #nufc to the teams to agree a few which I doubt will be easy.. ????

Would be gutted to see him go, he's a good player as it is and he will only get better. Hopefully Rafa will talk to him personally and he'll stay ????????

Good luck to him if he does go, shame it hasn’t worked out for him here but he deserves to be playing regularly and it doesn’t look like he will get that here
