'Some people don't like' what they've seen from 'flamboyant' Joelinton at Newcastle United - pundit

Frank McAvennie has hailed Eddie Howe for recognising Joelinton’s talent at Newcastle United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said it takes a “really good” manager to pick out talent the way Howe did with Joelinton.

On 8 September, the Daily Mail reported that the Newcastle boss admitted he was “shocked” by the 26-year-old’s talent after his first training session at Darsley Park in 2021.

The Brazilian had been struggling when Howe arrived on the scene, having only scored six goals in his first two seasons at St James’ Park.

The Magpies’ boss moved the forward into midfield which helped to improve his attacking and defending.

When asked why it took so long for Joelinton’s talent to be recognised, McAvennie told Football Insider: “He’s a bit flamboyant, he’s his own man and some people don’t like that.

Eddie Howe’s used to it. He’s come in and he’s seen past all of that and he’s seen the talent of the player. And that’s good management. It’s really good management.

The boy can play, he’s got it and luckily Eddie Howe is the man who picked it out. I’m delighted because he is a talent. All my mates from Newcastle say he’s a great player. There’s nothing better than a manager putting an arm round you and telling you they want you to be part of the team going forward. It’s great for the player.

Joelinton made 37 appearances for Newcastle across all competitions last season.

During those outings he scored four goals and provided one assist.
