Darren Bent claimed West Ham being in pursuit of Newcastle United defender Javier Manquillo was damning on Ryan Fredericks.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider pundit Laura O’Leary, the former England striker admitted that the Hammers wanting Manquillo seemed aimed at Fredericks as it suggests his performances haven’t been good enough.

It was reported recently that the Hammers were targeting a January move for Manquillo with Newcastle having a dilemma when it comes to deciding whether to sell him as he only has months left on his deal.

Bent explained that Fredericks will know himself that he hasn’t been good enough for the Hammers as he hasn’t been able to keep Pablo Zabaleta completely out of the first team.

When asked if West Ham being in pursuit on Manquillo is damning on Fredericks as it seems aimed at him, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah, and it’s tough.

“Pablo Zabaleta has a great career, been a great servant but he’s getting on, losing his pace, and unfortunately Fredericks has all the pace in the world but defensively he leaves a lot to be desired.

“So it’s a difficult one, so yeah it wouldn’t surprise me (if it’s aimed at him).

“But listen Fredericks will know in himself that he hasn’t been good enough as arguably at times he hasn’t even been the name on the teamsheet as Zabaleta has played games.

“And if you’re a younger right-back with pace and you still not guaranteed to play? Something is wrong.”

Fredericks has made 16 appearances across all competitions for Manuel Pellegrini’s side this season, registering one assist in the process.

The 27-year-old full-back has been at the London Stadium since joining the Hammers on a free transfer from Fulham in July 2018.

In other West Ham news, it can be REVEALED that Daniel Levy is set to block Hammers pursuit of Tottenham man who’s keen to move.
