‘Sooner the better’ – Exclusive: Top pundit warns ‘Hated’ West Ham owners
Frank McAvennie has urged the West Ham board to make signings quickly to “soften the hatred” from fans following the sale of Grady Diangana to West Brom.
The Irons legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that “the sooner players come in the better” with the new Premier League season just days away.
A number of players voiced their frustration after the sale of Diangana, 22, with club captain Mark Noble tweeting that he was angered by the decision.
A statement from the club said that the £18million raised from the winger’s sale would be reinvested “entirely” into the squad in this transfer window.
Football Insider revealed on Monday that David Moyes’s side had seen a £28million bid for James Tarkowski rejected by Burnley.
When asked by Football Insider if Noble was just to publicly voice his disapproval with Diangana’s sale, McAvennie said:
“Not just the captain has said that he was disappointed, and he has every right to do so. Some people say that he should not be saying things but he is the captain of West Ham United. He is entitled to.
“There is a lot of anger being vented towards the board. The board have an idea of what they want to do but so far they have done nothing.
“They have sold the boy and said they will buy players but they have not done it yet. I can see the supporters saying, ‘It is another one we never got.’
“If the owners get a couple of players in it will soften the hatred towards them. We have a long time to go in the transfer window but West Ham need to buy sooner rather than later. It is a long window but the sooner players can come in and settle, the better.”
