Souness predicts who will finish in PL top four, delivers verdict on Tottenham
By Richard Parks
Graeme Souness has predicted that Tottenham will finish in the Premier League top four this season if they avoid injuries to key players such as Harry Kane.
The Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool manager is convinced that Spurs “have the momentum” to make the cut for the guaranteed Champions League places following a string of impressive recent results.
The north Londoners have taken seven points out of a possible nine from their last three league fixtures against Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as being well placed to make the later rounds of the Champions League and FA Cup.
Souness believes Manchester United and Chelsea are battling for the fourth spot and to join runaway leaders Manchester City and in-form duo Liverpool and Tottenham in Europe’s premier competition next season.
“Rather than looking to catch City now, United will be looking over their shoulders at the form of the teams they are competing with for a top-four finish,” Souness told the Sunday Times.
“Right now, it looks as though Liverpool and Tottenham have the momentum to make the cut. That could leave United and Chelsea to squabble over the final place, though that could easily change with a couple of injuries. Say Kane, Eden Hazard or Salah are injured — that would have an impact.”
Football Insider verdict:
Spurs are fifth in the league ahead of Sunday’s marquee fixtures and are likely to dispose comfortably of Wilfried Zaha-less Crystal Palace before watching Manchester United and Chelsea slug it out at Old Trafford afterwards. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are four points behind United but there is light years in the difference in outlook between the two sides, as Jose Mourinho’s outfit grind out the points while the Londoners play with flair, imagination and on the front foot. The Premier League needs Tottenham to be one of its four representatives in the Champions League.
