Sources: Barnsley submit six-figure bid for Leeds product Pearce
Barnsley have made a six-figure bid for Wigan Athletic defender Tom Pearce, Football Insider has learned.
The Leeds United academy product, 23, has been a regular provider of assists for the Lancashire outfit.
Now a Barnsley source has told Football Insider that they are working on luring him ahead of tomorrow’s transfer cut-off.
Pearce is out of contract at the DW Stadium next year and the Latics may be tempted into selling their defender now to avoid losing him on free in 12 months time.
Wigan signed Pearce from Leeds for a fee in the region of £300,000 in August 2019.
The left-back was a regular starter for the League One side in the 2020-21 campaign.
He contributed eight assists in 28 appearances across all competitions to help Leam Richardson’s side avoid relegation.
Pearce has been in and out of Wigan’s side this season but started Saturday’s 1-0 win over Portsmouth and provided the assist for Callum Lang’s winner.
Barnsley are in the market for a new left-back before the transfer window closes.
The Tykes have endured a disappointing start to the new Championship campaign following a season in which they qualified for the play-offs.
Pearce could become Markus Schopp’s fifth summer signing after Devante Cole, Obbi Oulare, Josh Benson and Aaron Leya Iseka.
Speaking about transfers on Saturday, Schopp revealed he wants to add more experience to his squad before the window closes.
As quoted by the Yorkshire Post, he said: “It is something I think where sometimes, it would be important to have a bit more experience.”
