Sources: Big development after Man United make contact over £27m new signing

Manchester United are set to miss out to Bayer Leverkusen in the hunt to sign AS Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile, Football Insider understands.

The Premier League giants have been interested in signing the 19-year-old this summer and made contact with the Ligue 1 club over a potential transfer deal.

However, a recruitment source has told Football Insider that Leverkusen are in advanced talks with Monaco to sign the centre-back for a fee in the region of £27million and are confident a deal will be struck.

The teenager, who is a graduate of Monaco’s youth system, already has 46 first-team appearances under his belt since his debut back in November 2018.

He started 16 consecutive games in Ligue 1 following his introduction into the side and has emerged as one of the brightest young defenders in Europe.

A mainstay for France’s under-19 side, Badiashile featured a total of 20 times across all competitions for Monaco last season but he and his teammates could only secure a ninth-placed finish.

Despite his club’s indifferent campaign, Manchester United identified the 6ft 3in [Transfermarkt] enforcer as a star in the making and made an approach over a potential move this summer.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the market for defensive recruitments to bolster his options at Old Trafford despite the return of Chris Smalling and Marcus Rojo after their loan spells away.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were the first-choice centre-back pairing last season as Eric Bailly and Phil Jones made just 19 appearances between themselves.

However, Leverkusen have stolen a march over the Red Devils for Badiashile and are in negotiations over a deal which would be just shy of £30million.

The German outfit, who finished fifth in the Bundesliga last summer, have just ended their extended 2019/20 campaign after a 2-1 defeat to Inter Milan in their Europa League quarter-final.

In other Manchester United news, it can be revealed Carlo Ancelotti has told Everton to blow Solskjaer’s men out the water to sign a 22-year-old.
