Manchester United are set to miss out to Bayer Leverkusen in the hunt to sign AS Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile, Football Insider understands.
The Premier League giants have been interested in signing the 19-year-old this summer and made contact with the Ligue 1 club over a potential transfer deal.
However, a recruitment source has told Football Insider that Leverkusen are in advanced talks with Monaco to sign the centre-back for a fee in the region of £27million and are confident a deal will be struck.
The teenager, who is a graduate of Monaco’s youth system, already has 46 first-team appearances under his belt since his debut back in November 2018.
He started 16 consecutive games in Ligue 1 following his introduction into the side and has emerged as one of the brightest young defenders in Europe.
A mainstay for France’s under-19 side, Badiashile featured a total of 20 times across all competitions for Monaco last season but he and his teammates could only secure a ninth-placed finish.
Despite his club’s indifferent campaign, Manchester United identified the 6ft 3in [Transfermarkt] enforcer as a star in the making and made an approach over a potential move this summer.
