Sources: Big updates on Celtic deals for Mathias Kvistgaarden and Sydney van Hooijdonk

Celtic are making progress on a deal for Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden this month but their pursuit of Bologna forward Sydney van Hooijdonk has hit a stumbling block, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking to the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Hoops are eager for a new striker this month and are exploring deals across Europe.

However, the club have been priced out of a move for van Hooijdonk as Bologna’s £8million-plus asking price is too steep for Brendan Rodgers’ side midseason.

It is believed that Kvistgaarden, 21, could be available on more favourable terms and as revealed by Football Insider (12 January), the Hoops have opened talks to sign him this month.

A well-placed source told Football Insider that if Celtic get encouragement from Brondby regarding Kvistgaarden, they may make a move.

Van Hooijdonk, son of former Celtic striker Pierre van Hooijdonk, has had a slow start to the season having scored just once in 11 appearances.

However, the 23-year-old had an impressive season-long loan with Eredivisie side Heerenveen last season where he bagged 19 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions.

Denmark under-21 Kvistgaarden has had an exceptional first half of the season with Brondby having notched seven goals and seven assists.

Bologna are also in the frame to bring Celtic youngster Rocco Vata to Serie A, with Football Insider revealing (17 January) that they are in a race with Como and Sampdoria for the 18-year-old.
