Bristol City are lining up a move for Oxford United defender Robert Atkinson, Football Insider understands.
The centre-back, 22, has a contract with Oxford that runs until the summer of 2023.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Championship club City have set their sights on prising Atkinson from United following their elimination from the League One play-offs.
Oxford were beaten 6-3 over two legs by Blackpool as they failed to secure a trip to Wembley for the second year in a row.
Atkinson played every minute of Oxford’s play-off campaign and scored in the second leg at Bloomfield Road.
The left-footed defender didn’t miss a minute of his side’s last 18 League One games.
This strong run of form helped to confirm a place in the play-offs for the second successive season.
He failed to make several matchday squads at the start of the season before solidifying his place in the side.
After being born in Chesterfield, Atkinson spent his youth in France and played for AS Cannes’ academy.
He joined Basingstoke Town after moving back to England before signing for Fulham in 2017.
Atkinson failed to make a senior appearance for the Cottagers and was sold to Eastleigh before he moved to Oxford in January 2020.
The 6ft 4in defender has so far made 44 appearances for the U’s in all competitions, scoring two goals.
Bristol City are looking to strengthen their defence after finishing 19th in the Championship.
The club let 11 players leave for free at the end of the season after a disappointing campaign.
