Sources: Burton Albion plotting to sign Preston North End star Josh Harrop

Burton Albion are plotting a move for Preston North End midfielder Josh Harrop, sources have told Football Insider.

The 26-year-old is currently on the transfer list at Preston and has not travelled on the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain.

Harrop has linked up with Burton for training so that boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink can have a look at close quarters.

The former Man United midfielder made his senior bow under Jose Mourinho on the final day of the Premier League season in 2016/17, scoring in the win over Crystal Palace.

He then rejected a new deal at Old Trafford to join Preston North End that summer as a free agent.

After making a decent start to life at Deepdale he fell out of favour towards the end of Alex Neil’s time in charge.

His only appearance under current manager Ryan Lowe was the 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City in the FA Cup in January and his last appearance in the Championship came in December 2020.

He then joined League One side Fleetwood Town for the rest of the 2021-22 campaign but managed just five appearances, including three starts.

In the 2020-21 season, he spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Ipswich Town where he played 15 times, including three starts.

Burton Albion have already added Viljami Sinisalo and Davis Keillor-Dunn to the squad that comfortably avoided relegation from League One in 2021-22.

Meanwhile, Preston finished 13th in the Championship, 11 points above the play-off positions.

In other news, Burton Albion are racing to sign an Oxford United 28-year-old.
