Sources: Charlton Athletic working on late deal to sign Birmingham City star Leko

Charlton Athletic are working on a deal to sign Birmingham City striker Jonathan Leko on loan ahead of the transfer deadline, Football Insider understands.

The 22-year-old has featured regularly for the Blues this season but is expected to fall down the pecking order following the arrival of Troy Deeney.

A Charlton source has told Football Insider the club are pushing to strike a deadline day move for the versatile hitman.

Leko joined Birmingham from West Brom last summer and put pen to paper on a three-year deal.

He played 35 times across all competitions but failed to register a single goal or an assist.

Despite his lack of returns, the versatile forward has continued to feature for the Midlands outfit this term.

He has started once in the Championship and in both of the club’s League Cup ties.

Manager Lee Bowyer has used him as a substitute in a further three league matches.

However, the Blues have added former Watford star Deeney to their attacking ranks.

The 33-year-old penned a two-year contract at St Andrew’s on Monday (30th August).

The experienced striker’s arrival is expected to push Leko further down the pecking order and limit his game time.

As such, Charlton Athletic have made a move to give the young forward the chance to feature regularly in League One.

Able to play on either wing or as a centre-forward, Leko has spent the majority of his career in the Championship.

He has 72 second-tier appearances under his belt to date.

Leko also played 14 times in the Premier League during his time at West Brom.

In other news, another Championship side have agreed a six-figure deal to sign Crewe Alexandra star Owen Dale.
