Sources: Chelsea agree £65m Reece James deal as signing imminent
Reece James is set to sign a new Chelsea contract on Monday (5 September) worth more than £65million, sources have told Football Insider.
The right-back, 22, will put pen to paper on a five-year contract that will include the option of a further year following a breakthrough in negotiations.
Chelsea have reached an agreement with the player and he is set to sign ahead of a formal announcement.
The deal, worth £250,000-a-week, will make James the highest-paid defender in Chelsea’s history.
Man City and Real Madrid had been linked with the England international amid the uncertainty surrounding former owner Roman Abramovich earlier this year.
James’ contract is currently set to expire in June 2025 after he signed a fresh extension in January 2020.
The right-back has started five of Chelsea’s six games this term – notching one goal and one assist to pick up where he left off last season.
He registered six goals and 10 assists across 39 outings in all competitions last term.
The 22-year-old has already amassed 128 games for Chelsea since making his debut in September 2019 – lifting the Champions League in 2021.
The Blues have strengthened in defence this summer after losing key stars Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have added Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly – and deadline-day signing Denis Zakaria.
The Stamford Bridge club have started the new season with three wins from six games and sit sixth in the Premier League.
