Sources: Chelsea expect Chalobah to have left the club for good by 1 February after Tottenham twist

Chelsea expect defender Trevoh Chalobah to have left the club by the time the next transfer window shuts on 1 February, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the Blues have told the 24-year-old that he is free to seek a new club in January.

Chalobah has already been in talks with a number of clubs and is wanted by multiple European sides including Serie A giants Roma, where preliminary negotiations are underway.

Tottenham had eyed up a move for Chalobah this winter, but as revealed by Football Insider (8 December) they have cooled their interest in the centre-back amid their search for defensive cover following Micky van de Ven’s long-term injury.

Spurs had identified Chalobah as a top target but are now in pursuit of other options.

Chalobah has not featured for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season after his injury, which was confirmed in October.

Chelsea are eager to readdress the balance of the Argentine’s squad and, as revealed by Football Insider (14 December), will look to part ways with multiple stars this January.

It is believed players will need to move on from Stamford Bridge if the club are to do any further business in January, with Chalobah one of these the Blues are looking to sell.

He was a regular in the Chelsea side last season under the management of Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard and made 34 appearances in all competitions.

Chalobah started seven of Chelsea’s final eight games in the Premier League in the last campaign, where they finished 12th.

Following back-to-back defeats to Man United and Everton in the league, they sit 12th and next face rock-bottom Sheffield United at home on Saturday (16 December).
