Sources: ‘Huge’ update on Newcastle United bid to sign James Maddison in January
Newcastle United are planning to submit a new James Maddison bid in January, sources have told Football Insider.
The Magpies failed to land the Leicester City playmaker in the summer after tabling offers worth up to £50million.
Leicester held firm as they valued Maddison, 25, at £60million and would not let him go for less.
But Newcastle believe the attacking midfielder’s value is likely to drop as he will have only 18 months remaining on his contract in January.
The club’s recruitment team are keeping close tabs on Maddison and retain a line of communication with his representatives.
A source explained Eddie Howe is a “huge” admirer of the England international and has given the green light to his club continuing their pursuit.
Despite Maddison registering three goals and one assist in the opening seven games of the season, Leicester sit rock bottom of Premier League with one point.
Football Insider revealed on 19 September that Leicester City are sounding out potential managerial candidates as Brendan Rodgers’ job hangs by a thread.
He managed 18 goals and 12 assists across 53 games in all competitions last term.
Newcastle are lacking a creative influence despite spending in excess of £120million in the summer window (as per Transfermarkt).

Howe’s side added Sven Botman, Alexander Isak, Matt Targett, Nick Pope, and Lorius Karius but have registered just one win so far this term.
The Magpies face Fulham at Craven Cottage after the international break (1 October).
