Sources: Int'l 'desperate' to engineer Celtic move, Lennon keen after overnight developments

By Wayne Veysey

Greg Taylor is “desperate” to engineer a move to Celtic by the transfer deadline and Neil Lennon echoes that stance amid fears over the calibre of his current left-backs, Football Insider understands.

The Northern Irishman has made it clear to the Hoops hierarchy he wants a proven left-sided defender to compete with recent signing Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that negotiations were due to continue overnight to try and reach an agreement with Kilmarnock over a deal worth around £1million.

Another erratic display from Bolingoli-Mbombo in the otherwise emphatic 4-1 Europa League qualifier win at AIK last night, which secured a passage to the competition’s group stages, will have further convinced Lennon of the need for left-back reinforcements.

Celtic have been frustrated by Kilmarnock moving the goalposts during discussions over the fee for Taylor.

They believe they have been quoted higher prices than clubs south of the border, and this is one of the reasons for a deadlock in talks.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Scottish champions have been given a major boost in their pursuit as Sunderland have moved on to alternative targets after Kilmarnock rejected their £750,000 bid.

Celtic can also count upon Taylor’s desire to move from Ayrshire to Glasgow, and they have learned the player is “desperate” to secure the move by Monday night’s transfer cut-off.

The Scotland international has established himself as one of the outstanding full-backs in the Scottish Premiership since graduating from the Kilmarnock academy ranks to make 131 appearances for the club.

In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED that the club have opened talks to sign a ‘gem’ from English club wanted by Premier League big hitters.
