Sources: Joe Worrall ‘furious’ as Nottingham Forest move collapses after ‘agreement’

Nottingham Forest club captain Joe Worrall has been left “unhappy” and “furious” after missing out on a late move to Sheffield United, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on transfer deadline day (1 February) that Worrall’s move to Sheffield United has collapsed with the Blades instead pursuing a loan deal for Mason Holgate.

It is believed the Forest skipper was a top target for Chris Wilder at Bramall Lane throughout the January window.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had been adamant about their willingness to only sanction a permanent exit for Worrall – while Sheffield United could only fund a loan deal due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Forest eventually reversed that stance and made the centre-back available for loan, but it was too late and a move for Everton defender Holgate was on the verge of completion.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Worrall has been left “unhappy” and “frustrated” about Forest taking too long to make a deal happen.

He has featured sparingly for the Midlands giants this term despite his status as club captain.

The Forest academy product has made just nine appearances totalling 544 minutes of action across all competitions this season.

He started the opening five Premier League games of the 2023-24 campaign but has not made a league start since September.

Worrall penned a new contract at the City Ground just last September, keeping him at the club until June 2026.

Sheffield United pushed through a move for Holgate, who had a bit-part role on loan at Southampton in the first half of this season.

The Blades sit bottom of the Premier League on 10 points, while Forest sit 16th on 20 points.
