Sources: Leicester City discuss surprise Sam Allardyce appointment

Sam Allardyce has emerged as a surprise contender to take charge at Leicester City, sources have told Football Insider.

Sources with knowledge of the situation have revealed the 68-year-old has the support of Foxes head of recruitment Martyn Glover – who worked with the veteran manager at Blackburn, Sunderland, West Ham and Everton.

Internal talks have been held at the King Power Stadium over Allardyce potentially taking charge until the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

Sources say Leicester are now looking for a “firefighter” to take the hot seat with the potential of relegation looming large.

It is believed the Foxes will then reassess their options in the summer and look to appoint a long-term candidate.

The Midlands club currently sit 19th in the Premier League table following Brendan Rodgers’ exit on Sunday (2 April).

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (5 April) that Rodgers took a “massive” cut on the compensation he was due in order to leave the club.

Graham Potter was approached about replacing the Northern Irishman, but it has been widely reported that the sacked Chelsea boss turned down the opportunity to return to management instantly.

Allardyce’s last job was at West Brom in the 2020-21 season as the Baggies fought against relegation from the Premier League – but he was unable to prevent the club from dropping to the Championship.

Nevertheless, the 68-year-old has earned a reputation as a “survival specialist” during his 537 games in top-flight management.

He took charge of England for just one game in 2016 but left the role after allegations of malpractice.
