Sources: Leonard in advanced talks over new Brighton deal

Brighton midfielder Marc Leonard is in advanced talks over a new long-term contract, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The 19-year-old is highly regarded at the Premier League high flyers and they are keen to secure him to an extended deal.

A Brighton source has now told Football Insider that negotiations with Leonard are progressing well and all parties are confident of an agreement.

The Scotland Under-21 international joined Brighton from Hearts in the summer of 2018.

His current deal is due to expire at the end of the season.

The Glasgow-born midfielder made his senior debut for Brighton this season in the League Cup.

Leonard started in the wins over both Cardiff and Swansea.

However, he was left on the bench as the Seagulls were dumped out of the competition by Premier League rivals Leicester in October.

The youngster has been utilised in both attacking and defensive roles in midfield this season.

He has captained Brighton’s under-23 side for all three matches in the EFL Trophy this term.

The former Hearts man has notched three goals and two assists in Premier League 2 this season, meaning he has contributed to 26 per cent of Brighton’s goals in the competition.

After caps at under-17 and under-19 level, the 19-year-old earned his first call-up to the Scotland under-21 side last month.

He has gone on to make three appearances for his country’s youth side.

The midfield star played 90 minutes last night in a Euro 2023 qualifying defeat against Belgium.
