Sources: Luton Town in advanced talks to sign Louie Watson from Derby County

Luton Town are in advanced talks to sign Derby County midfielder Louie Watson on a free transfer, Football Insider understands.

The 21-year-old is out of contract at Derby and is available as a free agent.

A Luton source has told Football Insider that the club are closing in on a deal for Watson and are hopeful of securing a full agreement soon.

Watson is one of 16 Derby players whose contracts expired at the end of 2021-22 campaign amid the club’s ongoing takeover saga.

Local businessman David Clowes is reportedly set to put an end to uncertainty soon, with a deal to buy the club expected imminently.

It comes after Chris Kirchner pulled out of a deal fo buy the Rams after failing to provide the necessary funds.

Watson made his debut for Derby as a late substitute in a 4-0 win over Birmingham City in December 2020.

He made 14 further appearances for the League One side, six of which came last season.

The centre-midfielder came through the ranks at West Ham before moving to Pride Park in October 2020 on a free transfer.

Watson has also been capped five times by the Republic of Ireland’s under-21 side.
