Sources: Major update on Man United bid to sign Cody Gakpo as new PSV asking price revealed
Man United are the only club to have held talks with PSV Eindhoven about signing Cody Gakpo as they continue to work on a January deal, sources have told Football Insider.
This site revealed last month (26 November) that United are making progress in their bid to lure the World Cup star, 23, from the Dutch club after reaching an “agreement in principle” with the player.
United are in regular contact with Gakpo’s camp ahead of January but are aware his price tag has rocketed after his World Cup exploits.
The major stumbling block to a winter window deal is agreeing a fee with Gakpo’s employers.
United tried to sign Gakpo in the summer and had a £25million bid rejected by PSV, as first revealed by this site.
It is believed the Dutch club wanted £30million for the forward in the summer but are now holding out for £45million as they benefit from a World Cup ‘bounce’ for one of the tournament’s group stage standouts.
Multiple Premier League clubs have been linked with Gakpo, including Leeds United and Everton.
But United are the only one who have had direct negotiations with PSV up to now. They also have a trump card in Gakpo’s countryman Erik ten Hag, who is represented by the same agency.
Speaking to Dutch outlet NRC prior to the Netherlands’ World Cup elimination (7 December), the forward admitted he is ready to consider a move to Old Trafford – after “panicking” when Leeds United moved for him in the summer.
In addition to his three World Cup strikes, Gakpo has notched a combined 30 goals and assists for PSV in just 24 games.

Each of those games have come in a left-winger role – which raises questions about Jadon Sancho’s future should the Dutchman complete a January switch.
United boss Ten Hag has admitted Sancho has “physical and mental issues” to rectify before he can return to action.
In other news, Man United star backed to quit Old Trafford after new development – “all of a sudden”.
