Sources: Man City star Rico Lewis set to agree deal by end of May
Man City starlet Rico Lewis remains in talks over a lucrative long-term contract at the club, sources have told Football Insider.
It is believed that all parties are happy with the direction of negotiations and are confident of an agreement before the end of the 2022-23 campaign.
Lewis, 18, has been one of the breakthrough stars of the season after impressing in a number of roles in the Man City defence.
He has played on the left and right flanks, but also looks adept at filling in at the heart of the Citizens’ midfield.
The youngster’s new deal is likely to reflect his potential as a key man for club and country in the years to come.
Lewis currently earns a reported £5,000-a-week on his current contract – which is set to expire in June 2024.
He has made 16 appearances across all competitions this season, including six starts in the Premier League.
Bury-born Lewis is the latest youngster to come off the production line at Man City, following the emergences of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer in recent years.
He made his debut for England’s Under-19 side in September 2022.
Lewis is set to fight with Kyle Walker for a starting berth at right-back in the coming years.
His chances of first-team action have been vastly improved following the shock departure of Joao Cancelo in the January window.
Football Insider revealed on 4 February that Cancelo, 28, is not expected to play for the club again after completing a shock loan-to-buy move to Bayern Munich.
Bayern are able to activate a £61million buy option at the end of the season.
