Sources: Man United turn attention to signing new keeper after De Gea reveal

Man United are in the market for a backup goalkeeper this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider sources revealed on Friday (28 April) that the Red Devils are growing increasingly confident about David de Gea signing a new contract.

The 32-year-old’s current deal expires this summer, but he is in advanced talks to extend his stay at Old Trafford and remain as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper heading into next season.

De Gea has agreed to take a pay cut to stay in Manchester, with his current £375,000 per week wages placing him as the club’s top earner.

Despite the news of De Gea’s contract renewal, it is understood that United will continue to monitor goalkeeper targets this summer.

Erik ten Hag ideally wants a young goalkeeper to challenge De Gea’s spot in the starting XI with a long-term plan of replacing him as the club’s No.1.

Football Insider sources revealed links between United and Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier, with the Yorkshire club demanding £40million for the 23-year-old.

The club’s current goalkeeping department is made up of loanee Jack Butland and veteran Tom Heaton, while Dean Henderson faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford after lashing out about the “criminal” treatment he felt at the club.

It has been highlighted as a huge problem area by Ten Hag, with Butland set to return to Crystal Palace at teh end of the season and Heaton nearing retirement aged 37.
