Sources: Matty Longstaff wants to quit Newcastle United as English clubs race to agree deal

Matty Longstaff is set to leave Newcastle United for free in the summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Longstaff’s contract expires in June and it is understood the north-east giants are not planning to offer him a new deal.

The 22-year-old is attracting interested from clubs in the Championship and League One and is seen as an attractive prospect if he is available for free.

Football Insider has learned that the midfielder sees himself moving on in the summer after failing to make his mark on Eddie Howe’s side.

Unlike his brother Sean, Matty Longstaff has found it difficult to settle in at St James’ Park and spent the first half of the season on loan at Colchester United.

He made ten appearances for the League Two side before picking up an injury on Boxing Day.

Longstaff returned to Tyneside after suffering an ACL injury and is set to undergo a lengthy period of recovery.

Since moving up to the first team from the academy in 2021, Longstaff has been on loan to Aberdeen and Mansfield Town and has made just 20 senior appearances for the Magpies’ first team.

Now it is believed Championship and League One clubs will be looking to make a move at the end of the season for the out of favour midfielder and it is increasingly likely he will leave for free.

Unlike his brother, Sean Longstaff has been a firm favourite under Howe and has made 30 appearances for Newcastle this season.

He has scored three goals and provided three assists in those outings.

The 25-year-old signed a contract extension in May which keeps him at St James’ until 2025.
