Sources: Middlesbrough agree to sign Blackburn Rovers star Lenihan

Middlesbrough have agreed to sign Blackburn Rovers defender Darragh Lenihan, Football Insider understands.

The Republic of Ireland international is a free agent at the end of June after failing to agree terms on a new Rovers deal.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Lenihan has agreed the terms of a four-year deal with Boro.

He is expected to complete a move to the Riverside Stadium soon.

Blackburn confirmed last month they were in talks to extend the 28-year-old’s contract.

However, Lenihan has chosen not to commit his future at Ewood Park.

The centre-back is instead set to join up with Chris Wilder’s men at the Riverside Stadium.

Boro are in the market for defensive recruits, with Sol Bamba, Lee Peltier and Neil Taylor all leaving at the end of their contracts.

They identified Lenihan as a proven Championship talent who would be available this summer.

The Republic of Ireland star joined Rovers’ youth academy from Irish outfit Belvedere FC back in 2011.

He spent time on loan at Burton Albion during the 2014/15 campaign, playing 17 times for the Brewers.

The defender made his Blackburn debut in April 2015, shortly after returning from his temporary spell away.

He has gone on to play 219 times for Rovers across all competitions, with eight goals to his name.

Lenihan has 219 games of Championship experience under his belt, 41 of which came during the 2021/22 campaign.

Wilder currently has the likes of Paddy McNair, Grant Hall, Dael Fry and young Nathan Wood as his centre-back options at Boro.
