Sources: Middlesbrough plot move to sign ex-Newcastle star Dan Barlaser in January

Middlesbrough are plotting a move for Rotherham United midfielder Dan Barlaser in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The 25-year-old former Newcastle player has caught the eye this season with two and six assists for the Millers and his performances have brought him onto the radar of several clubs.

Boro boss Michael Carrick is understood to be a big admirer of Barlaser and is keen to bring him to the Riverside.

Rotherham are reluctant to lose Barlaser, but he is out of contract next summer.

They could be forced to cash in on him in January rather than risk allowing him to leave for free in the summer.

Barlaser first arrived at Rotherham on loan during the 2019-20 season, while he was in the final year of his Newcastle contract.

After helping the Millers achieve promotion to the Championship, the move was made permanent in October 2020.

Barlaser has gone on to make 144 appearances for Rotherham and helped the club win the EFL Trophy during his first permanent year at the club.

The midfielder came through the youth ranks at Newcastle and made 5 appearances for the senior side.

All of those appearances were in the domestic cups though he was called up to the substitutes bench for Premier League games on several occasions.

Middlesbrough suffered a poor start to the 2022-23 season and currently find themselves 15th in the table, four points away from the relegation zone.

Boro are next in action against Luton Town on Saturday (10 December).

In other news, sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle United have been handed a major transfer boost as near-record figure revealed.
