Sources: MK Dons agree to sign Watson after Reading exit

MK Dons have agreed to sign defender Tennai Watson after he quit Reading, Football Insider has learned.

The League One club have finalised a deal with the 24-year-old following an impressive spell on trial.

A Dons source has told Football Insider that the club have secured a total agreement with Watson following a breakthrough in talks.

Watson has been at Reading since 2016 but only managed to make nine appearances for the club before being released this summer.

Seven of those came during the 2016-17 season with the majority of his game time coming in the EFL Cup.

When called upon to play in the Championship, Watson only played 97 minutes across three outings.

He was mainly deployed as a right-back during his time at the club but was also utilised as a left-back and a defensive midfielder.

The Englishman signed his most recent Reading deal in February 2018 as he was shipped out on loan to AFC Wimbledon the following season.

There, he made 28 appearances in all competitions.

Wimbledon finished 20th in League One that season, avoiding relegation on goal difference.

Watson will now link up with Wimbledon’s rivals MK Dons as he looks for a fresh start away from Reading.

His only other spell away from Reading came in the 2019-20 season as the defender joined Coventry on loan.

However, he only made seven appearances for the club, racking up just 418 minutes of action.

This means since 2016, Watson has only played 2099 minutes of league football.
